Balmoral Castle, Scotland by Andrew W. Melrose (1836-1901), original chromolithograph published by Raphael Tuck & Sons ca. 1885.

Extraordinary detail and vibrancy of color in this antique masterpiece. The returning hunting party with hounds is exceptionally clear and fine. Land by the castle is being busily harvested. 

Due to the glass in the frame there is some light shadowing and glare, this also slightly distorts the print's clarity in the photos.

• The frame is new and is of museum quality, very fine.
• This is a large 21.5 x 35.5 inch image, frame is 28.5 x 42.5 inches. 
• Print has light damage in the sky area only. A crack is evident mid-sky and there are other slight crease marks upon close inspection.

• Printed along the bottom of the print: This design is the property of Andrew W. Melrose the artist and copyrighted at Washington.

Andrew Melrose was born in Scotland, emigrated to the US as a young man and established himself as a painter in New Jersey. He is most famous as a landscape artist, paintings scenes in the Hudson River Valley, the western US and back in his native Scotland where he frequently returned for inspiration. His paintings are hung in The White House, and numerous museums.

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert had this new Balmoral Castle built in 1856 on the River Dee in Scotland. It has served as the summer residence of the Bristish Royal family ever since, and it was here that Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles sought to escape the glare of the media in the aftermath of Princess Diana's death in 1997.
