Virtual Band A Bluegrass Banjo Method Volumes 1, 2, 6 and 8

by Jay Buckey

Instructions book and CD for The Bluegrass Style Banjo Picker

Tablature Method

VOLUME 1 - This book is in two sections: 'Exercises in Picking' and the 'Song Section'. If you are a complete beginner, then you'll want to start at the beginning. If, on the other hand, you already know some about the banjo and can read tablature (written banjo music), then by all means, move on to the song section. There are easy and more difficult arrangements to keep everyone challenged. The tablature includes right and left hand fingerings and markings where you need to place accents on the notes to make the melody stand out more, giving you a more professional sound.

The first 12 tracks of the CD are laid out as a listening CD first, the songs played at their regular tempos and the banjo pushed to the right side of your stereo. If you have a balance control, you will then be able to eliminate it altogether allowing you to be the ‘banjo player' in the band. Following these, the remaining tracks are a repeat of the same songs, but at slower tempos, half speed, 3/4 speed and so on. With many of the songs, there are also a variety of solos with differing degrees of difficulty. So, depending on your ability, you can choose the difficulty of solo to work on as well as the speed to play it at. By picking along with the CD, you will be spending ‘quality practice time' and make RAPID PROGRESS. The important back-up to the songs are included, mainly in the styles of Earl Scruggs and J D Crowe, inviting you play a more supportive role with the rhythm section as other instruments take a solo break or when the vocalist comes back in with another verse.

CONTENTS:

Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms*
Banjo In The Hollow
My Home's Across The Blueridge Mountains*
Bear Creek Hop
Kentucky Waltz*
Feudin' Five Strings
Cripple Creek*
Eight More Miles To Louisville*

and more.
(* Arrangement with vocals.)

VOLUME 2 - The arrangements for this Volume were selected for their ‘jamming appeal’ at bluegrass festivals. The material was inspired by your many email and phone-in requests including a mix of songs ranging from bluegrass standards, vocal tunes, gospel, banjo instrumentals, fiddle tunes and so on. There’s a little something for everyone in this project. You will find many of the techniques that you’ve been working on in Volume 1 in this follow up work.

As before and like all of the Virtual Band Volumes, there are a total of 71 minutes of slow, medium and faster recordings giving you added control in your picking. The solos are 'razor sharp', accurate and faithful to the CD recording and designed to be playable, interesting and practical in jamming with others. That all important back up behind the vocals is also transcribed below the vocal line to give you the 'feel' of the pros, like JD Crowe. The greatest care has been exercised in making this recording as professional as possible giving you the desire to practice along with 'the Virtual Band'.

VOLUME 6 - I would rate the arrangements: 25% Intermediate, 50% Advanced Intermediate and 25% Advanced. After carefully looking over the material, I think this is one of the more advance works that I've released. Some of the faster tunes have been pushed up a bit from the standard 'fast' speed of 200 to 210 and 220. If you've been working with the earlier volumes, you will enjoy the added challenge of 'nudging' up the metronome a notch or two! There are slow, medium and faster recordings available to make sure that you keep your timing accurate and playing clean. There is detailed back up parts behind the vocal parts as well as selected instrumental breaks, like the fiddle. Left hand fingerings are added in strategic places that you may need to keep every thing smooth sounding. When arranging this Volume, I tried to keep everything 'fresh', again, relying heavy on the Scruggs style and sprinkling the solos with some nice melodic runs as heard by the masters; Alan Munde, Bela Fleck and Scott Vestal.

VOLUME 8 - This project is jammed full of great songs that you will give you hours and hours of enjoyable practice and performance. This Volume contains some really great songs ranging from Old Time, Bluegrass, Swing/Jazz, Irish, Country, Fiddle and Banjo tunes and Gospel. There is something here for everyone in your band.
