of the world’s most renowned jeweler—The
House of Faberge.

Garwood’s
pieces so closely resemble the 1800s jeweler to
the thrones of Russia, Norway, and Sweden that
they are considered true works of art. Her
designs have been offered for sale in
National Geographic’s gift
catalog, The Smart Museum in
Chicago, the Science Museum in Miami,
and the High Museum of Art in
Atlanta.
It really is an ancient
Chinese secret. In northern China, making
filigree and enamel jewelry has been passed down
hundreds of years from one master craftsman to
the next. Among their closely guarded talents is
making sterling silver pieces plated with 24
carat gold that looks like real solid
gold.
Barbara’s
challenge was to make the pieces smaller, more
feminine, and practical for Western tastes and
fashion. That was a difficult undertaking in
rural China, where old habits die hard. “In
Chinese craft, you can only make changes when
you are a master,” says Garwood. “Here I was
some crazy American trying to mess things up.
The way they look at it, you cannot become a
master and start changing designs until you have
copied your mentor a zillion times or so and you
are older.”
"Because
you don’t see this type of jewelry, people stop
me in airports all the time and ask if what I’m
wearing is antique” says Barbara.
“Customers can’t believe it’s that
inexpensive for that kind of look,” says Kathy
Kinev, owner of Jewel Creations in Atlanta,
Georgia’s high gloss Buckhead shopping district.

| How they
make it: |
|
It takes two people
2-3 weeks to complete 1 Bracelet. All the jewelry
is individually hand crafted and
designed.
Sterling Silver wire
is hand fashioned with tweezers to create flowers,
butterflies, and other filigree forms. These
compositions are fired in a kiln at approximately
1700 deg. F to be fused together with silver dust.
This creates the body of the piece which then
receives enamel color and stones.
The outlined designs
are then filled with a very fine ground enamel
powder and fired again in the kiln. This turns the
enamel into glass with a high gloss finish with
permanent beauty.
The last step is to set
the stones and to 24k gold plate or antique many
of the pieces. Many unusual stones are used
including chrysocolla, rhodocrosite, chrysoprase,
water sapphires as well as semi-precious stones
such as garnets, lapis, amethyst, carnelian, onyx
and turquoise.
