Album notes
Take one flautist (Isobel Sollenberger) and force her to fend for herself against waves of grungy, garagey psych-rock like a salmon fighting a downstream current. Philadelphia's Bardo Pond does just that. Brothers John and Michael Gibbons stir up the Pond's lysergic murk, creating the convection that carries Sollenberger's effects-heavy flute and strung-out blues siren voice through the sonic upheaval of "On a Side Street," "No Time to Waste," and "Adhesive." Celebrating the mantle of chemical excess inherited from Blue Cheer and Spacemen 3, tracks like "Vent" are steeped in caustic distortion and propelled by Joe Culver's furious drumming. BUFO ALVARIUS, named after a psychedelically delicious toad whose secretions pack a potent hallucinogenic punch, has the dangerous allure of double-chocolate fudge laced with razorblades. Art Difuria's production gives these edits of the Pond's freeform basement jams a touch of clarity, allowing the strong melodies to peer through the sludge but otherwise leaving the music to the Gibbons' druggy, toad-licking devices. This CD reissue of the group's 1994 debut LP appends the extraordinary "Amen," nearly 30 minutes of exploratory Bardo navigations built around a recording of church bells. The track introduces mantric bassist Clint Tekeda and presages the shape of 1996's phenomenal AMANITA.

...Bardo Pond spray the firmament with muck and it's more spectacular than boring old stars. Their (mushroom) heads are in the clouds, their guitars submerged in a golden mire... Alternative Press (05/01/1995)
