My Oh My! I thought I lived in a nice middle class neighborhood with "new
architecture" and as I read this book it become clear to me that much of the
urban architecture I thought of as "middle class urban" or "American suburban"
was in fact, still derived from our American Farm traditions and structures.
These fundamentally sound, cost, space, and functionally
efficient structures have been the mainstay of American family and home and
business foundation lives for generations of Americans and have changed our way
of living from early survivalist styles into a rational, wholesome prosperity
based on sound functional designs that the entire world now emulates as
rational.

Whether you are an architect seeking good sound base
designs to move forward from, a home or farm owner seeking some nice plans to
compare to or build with, or simply a lover or historian of "Americana" this is
a great book.
In one volume we learn the how to and get practical plans
for everything from country farm houses and cottages to great horse barns and
just about every other practical structure including ice houses, and hen houses,
even octagonal ones. wow!
I want to build a couple of these, they just look so cozy
that I am eyeing my bank account and wondering where I would put another home,
if I had the land for it, sigh.
Beware! This is the kind of book that makes you want to go
build something!

After looking around at these designs I trashed the early
drawings I got from my architect for a new horse barn and went back to him with
the plans for an octagonal barn with the silo in the middle, and got him to get
me building permits for something more creative. I love it. This book gave me
the impetus to look at my needs in a different and more creative, and more
functional light, and the results are wonderful. Take courage, you can do
something creative!

I hate reading in general, and especially hate wasting time
on technical clap-trap! This book is full of pictures and plans, and gave me
just the bare facts to understand why a design might or might not be smart
choice for my needs. Just what the ole alley cat needed to make decisions.
