BATTLES & LEADERS of CIVIL WAR/4 BOOKS in SLIPCASE/1956

BATTLES AND LEADERS OF THE CIVIL WAR.  BEING FOR THE MOST PART CONTRIBUTIONS BY UNION AND CONFEDERATE OFFICERS, BASED UPON "THE CENTURY WAR SERIES." EDITED BY ROBERT UNDERWOOD JOHNSON AND CLARENCE CLOUGH BUEL, OF THE EDITORIAL STAFF OF "THE CENTURY MAGAZINE". NEW INTRODUCTION BY ROY F. NICHOLS.  VOLUMES I - IV.  New York: Thomas Yoseloff, 1956.  First Edition, thus.

A nice copy complete 4-volume set of this classic collection of descriptions of the major battles and military leaders of the Civil War. These 4 thick books have hundreds of illustrations throughout. They are in excellent condition, with no writing or markings, and almost no wear, and they are housed in the original slipcase.  Published more than 50 years ago, these books are now long out of print.

NOTE: There are more pictures at the bottom of this listing. You can click on the pictures to enlarge them.

From the Slip Case:  "Some twenty years after the end of the Civil War--when that great conflict was still a living memory to the men who fought it -- the editors of the Century magazine began to publish accounts of the battles of that war written by the leaders on both sides who had planned the campaigns and by other eyewitnesses who were present at the scene.  These articles, appearing in the Century during the years 1884-87, became the fountain head of authentic source material on the War Between the States as it was waged on land, on sea, and along the vital riverways.  Later, the individual accounts were collected and published in four volumes which were widely distributed, although the set has since become extremely scarce, obtainable only from dealers in rare books.

"This new edition of Battles and Leaders of the Civil War is a complete and unabridged re-issue of that work.  containing all the illustrations (nearly two thousand prints, steel engravings, on-the-spot battle sketches, maps and rare photographs) and the entire text (two million words) of the original series of articles, it is a magnificent reconstruction of four crucial years of war, reviving for the reader of today all of the excitement, tragedy, heroism, and despair of a conflict that almost destroyed the nation.  The incomparable sweep and range of the Battles and Leaders of the Civil War have made it a deathless work.  A great primary source in American history, it is also alive with the tumultuous passion of warfare, the storm and stress of combat, the clash of two vast armies--each composed of Americans--pitted against one another in a desperate, unrelenting struggle."

Contents include:  Signs of War; Fort Sumter; Organizing for the Conflict; First Operations in Virginia; Fireside and Field of Battle; Campaign of the First Bull Run; Wilson's Creek, Lexington and Pea Ridge; Belmont and Fort Henry; Mill Springs, the Big Sand and Fort Donelson; The River Gun-Boats From Fort Donelson to New Madrid; Shiloh; Naval Preparations; Coast Operations in the Carolinas; "Monitor" and "Merrimac"; Fort Pulaski; The Capture of New Orleans; Events of 1861-2; McClellan Before Richmond; The Shenandoah Valley in '62; The Seven Days' Fighting; Lee's Campaign Against Pope; Lee's Invasion of Maryland; Iuka and Corinth; The Perryville Campaign; Burnside at Fredericksburg; Chancellorsville; Gettysburg; The Vicksburg Year; Port Hudson; Murfreesboro'; Chickamauga; Chattanooga; Charleston; Olustee; Operations after Gettysburg; The Wilderness Campaign; Atlanta; Final Operations in Arkansas and Missouri; Mobile and the Gulf; Cavalry Operations on the Tennessee Line; Up and Down the Shenandoah; Petersburg; The Confederate Cruisers; The Confederate Ram "Albemarle"; the Capture of fort fisher; Sherman's March Through the Confederacy; From the James to Appomattox court House; The Fall of Richmond; Closing Operations; etc.
