From the Slip Case: "Some twenty years after the end of the Civil War--when that great conflict was still a living memory to the men who fought it -- the editors of the Century magazine began to publish accounts of the battles of that war written by the leaders on both sides who had planned the campaigns and by other eyewitnesses who were present at the scene. These articles, appearing in the Century during the years 1884-87, became the fountain head of authentic source material on the War Between the States as it was waged on land, on sea, and along the vital riverways. Later, the individual accounts were collected and published in four volumes which were widely distributed, although the set has since become extremely scarce, obtainable only from dealers in rare books.
"This new edition of Battles and Leaders of the Civil War is a complete and unabridged re-issue of that work. containing all the illustrations (nearly two thousand prints, steel engravings, on-the-spot battle sketches, maps and rare photographs) and the entire text (two million words) of the original series of articles, it is a magnificent reconstruction of four crucial years of war, reviving for the reader of today all of the excitement, tragedy, heroism, and despair of a conflict that almost destroyed the nation. The incomparable sweep and range of the Battles and Leaders of the Civil War have made it a deathless work. A great primary source in American history, it is also alive with the tumultuous passion of warfare, the storm and stress of combat, the clash of two vast armies--each composed of Americans--pitted against one another in a desperate, unrelenting struggle."
