The ability to receive weak stations is determined by two things, the receiver noise figure, and the amount of atmospheric and man made noise present. Noise figure is a technical term that represents the amount of noise produced by the receiver, that the signal must overcome to be heard. The lower, the better. A low noise broadband preamp improves the sensitivity of vintage tube receivers by lowering the overall noise figure. What causes older receivers to have high noise figures is the technology available when they were designed, and misalignment of the RF tuning. The tracking of the local oscillator and RF tuning is never perfect. Most tube receivers have poor sensitivity on the higher frequencies so the improvement will be very noticable above 10MHz to 15 MHz. Also noise is lower on the higher frequencies. Another way to think of it is that adding a low noise preamp to your receiver is the same as increasing the length or efficiency of your antenna.

The BBPV has a noise figure of 2.5 to 3 db and a gain of greater than 10 db. That's more than 3 S units. This combination of low noise figure and 10 db gain will improve virtually any receiver. Most tube receivers have poor sensitivity on the higher frequencies so the improvement will be very noticable above 10MHz to 15 MHz. Because the amount of noise present varies, it won't improve every weak station 100% of the time, but you will always have the best sensitivity possible for the noise conditions. The frequency range is 500KHz to well over 30MHz. Installation requires soldering. Power is from the 6.3V or 12.6V filament supply. It cannot be powered by receivers that don't have a power transformer. Model BBP-.5-30 must be used. This is new and I am the manufacturer. More information is available at:
