GREETINGS AND WELCOME TO INTERSTELLAR VINYL.

***

//***IMPORTANT INTERSTELLAR COMMUNICATIONS

In late 2009 and in early 2010, I am auctioning off a small number of records that come from my personal collection.  These are volumes that are either duplicated or do not conform to the current focus and scope of my collection. In short, they simply need a good home.  And they come from a good home (i.e. the quiet, smoke-free, pet-and-pest-free, dust-free, climate and light controlled, archival-type environment of a true vinyl fanatic), so no worries!

Have a look, and have a splendid day.***//

THE BEATLES

"A HARD DAY'S NIGHT"

PARLOPHONE PMC-1230 (mono)

U.K., 1964

ABSOLUTE, FIRST MONO PRESS

WITH ERNEST J. DAY JACKET

I am offering a sweet and covetable copy of the Beatles' third album, in glorious mono with investment grade vinyl.  I can't believe I'm letting this one go, and if I didn't have an extra copy, it wouldn't be going anywhere!  It's quite possible it has only been played a few times. If you don't have the big bucks an impeccably flawless copy of this record will ultimately cost you (or even if you do), this is the one you have been waiting for.  It is an awesome example of a well preserved, 45 year old record.

CONDITION REPORT

(Please refer to my strict 5-STAR GRADING SCALE, below.)

LABELS

The labels are in Mint minus (Side 1 perilously close to true Mint) condition, with no spindle wear, one spider trail on Side 1 and no spider trails on Side 2. Characteristic of the 1964 first pressing Parlophone labels with the standard yellow block "Parlophone" lettering are the "Sold in the U.K..." statement across the top, and the "All rights of the manufacturer" message around the edge of the label preceded by "The Parlophone Co. Ltd". The "K T" stamp is noted on Side 2, around the spindle hole.

VINYL

This vinyl is in Excellent plus to Near Mint condition, being the beneficiary of careful, sparing play (no more than a handful of times, in my assessment) and proper handling and storage for the last 45 years. The record lays flat and spins perfectly straight with no sign of warping. Under the unrelenting 60 watt lightbulb at various angles I can't detect any groovewear whatsoever. There are a just a few highly superficial marks and sleeve wisping on both sides, mostly on Side 2.  On medium to high end audio equipment at volume expect very minor audible noise in the quiet passages, but nothing offensive, and nothing that will distract from the true majesty of an early Beatles mono press. On my critical playback there were absolutely no skips, jumps or sticking, and none of the kind of noise that precludes the beauty and warmth emanating from these grooves in any significant way.  I was struck at the power and the texture of the mixes, and was reminded why George Martin and the Beatles toiled over every mono mix the way they did. The record itself is of exceptional quality, so typical of the older Parlophone pressings.  Thick and inflexible (this one weighs in at 145 grams), these older records were meant to take the abuse that the later "Dynaflex" type pressings can't.  You'd be hard pressed to find a nicer example of this record, "any time at all."

JACKET

EX /★★★☆☆

The original Ernest J. Day flipback laminated jacket, with bold "mono" text, is in strong Excellent condition. There are no split seams, no writing, no stickers and virtually no edge wear.   The spine is still rigid with nicely centered text.

FRONT: A couple of "thumbnail" creases are noted at the opening, in the vicinity of George and Paul.  Some other creasing is noted on the front, top left, and along the spine. The laminate still shines with no breaks or peeling. Only some minor wear from handling and pulling in and out of the stacks is noted.  There is just the hint of ringwear, mostly along the bottom edge center.  If I were to rate the severity of the ringwear on a scale of '1' to '10', with '1' being the least offensive and '10' being the worst, it would definitely rate a '1'. All four corners are still sharp; some edge wear is noted, bottom left corner.

BACK: The white is not as white as it once was, but the entire back panel is still highly presentable.  There is some very minor foxing along the opening edge, a small, brownish stain along the top flipback, center, measuring approximately 1/8" (≈ 3.3. mm) in amorphous diameter (see photo). Again, some creasing is noted in three places along the spine side flipback, and at the bottom left corner (see photo).  Also in that corner you may note one small drop of white paint or paper correction fluid (measuring less than 1/8" (≈ 3.3. mm) in amorphous diameter).  It is not offensive, but it is there and best left alone in my view.  The flipbacks are completely sealed with no sign of peeling or fraying.

Overall, the entire jacket is still very solid, and should please all but perhaps the most finicky of perfectionists out there.

INNER SLEEVE

NM /★★★★☆

The original Emitex inner sleeve, in Near Mint condition, is included. The record itself is housed in a super clean, rice paper type replacement sleeve.

//***GRADING

NOTE: I am very strict in my grading, as strict as true Goldminestricter than Record Collector and absolutely stricter than any other record seller here on ebay or just about anywhere else. (What would pass as "Near Mint" with a lot of these sellers would never make that grade here.) I make this claim loudly and proudly and I challenge any other seller out there to dethrone me, if you can.  This is my credo.

I visually grade closely under harsh, 60 watt desktop light and I am very unforgiving of flaws.

When I play-grade, I use a Dual CS-5000 turntable, a MacIntosh MA-6200 receiver and a pair of JBL 4312 control monitors, at volume.

I believe in full and truthful disclosure. So bid with the utmost of confidence, knowing I am a collector... just like you.

For all of my auctions, I use the following  5-STAR GRADING SCALE

M / ★★★★★ (MINT, or 5 stars) - an absolutely flawless gem;

[4.5 stars = "MINT MINUS"]

NM / ★★★★☆ (NEAR MINT, or 4 stars) - highly desirable, nearly perfect;

[3.5 stars = "EXCELLENT PLUS"]

EX /  ★★★☆☆ (EXCELLENT, or 3 stars) - a respectable piece, worthy of any collection, with very few superficial flaws;

[2.5 stars = "VERY GOOD PLUS"]

VG / ★★☆☆☆ (VERY GOOD, or 2 stars) - an acceptable piece with notable flaws;

[1.5 stars = "VERY GOOD MINUS"]

 G /  ★☆☆☆☆ (GOOD, or 1 star) - upgrade needed, but certainly not trash; a playable copy.

Note that I use the ‘+’ (plus) or ‘-’ (minus) signs and half-stars (+½) to fine-tune the grading.

I also use SS (STILL FACTORY SEALED), when applicable.***//

//***SHIPPING & PAYMENT

I will ship only to the U.S.A., Canada, Western Europe [please view map here], Australia, New Zealand and Japan.  If you are not among these countries, please DO NOT bid.

NOTE:  U.S. Bidders - The ebay program will only allow for a US$ 4.00 shipping charge, which, quite frankly, is absurd. Please know that I cannot and will not ship this record for US$ 4.00.

U.S.A. only - Single boxing, with insurance and delivery confirmation (both required and included), Media rate US$ 7.00.  For Priority Mail , add US $5.00. No extra charge for a 2nd record.  Each additional record beyond 2, add US$ 2.00.  For Bullet-proof double boxing (recommended), add US$ 5.00.

Canada only - Single boxing, with insurance and delivery confirmation (both required and included), Surface rate US$ 14.00.  For Air Mail, add US $6.00.   No extra charge for a 2nd record.  Each additional record beyond 2, add US$ 3.00.  For Bullet-proof double boxing (recommended), add US$ 5.00.

Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan - No single boxing option available.  Bullet-proof double boxing only, registered air post with insurance and signature delivery (both required and included), US$ 39.00.  No extra charge for a 2nd record.  Each additional record beyond 2, add US$ 6.00.

①Single boxing is a standard corrugated cardboard LP mailer with cardboard inserts (pads) for vertical reinforcement. CAUTION: This is only the most basic of protection that most U.S. record sellers use. Choosing this option significantly increases the chances of damage due to the flagrantly careless actions of the postal service, for which I will not be held responsible.  Insurance is nice, but it won't fix something that is broken!

Bullet-proof double boxing™ is guaranteed, safe delivery for your coveted LP.  Materials used include a new, 200 lb. crush-tested corrugated cardboard LP mailer with cardboard inserts (pads) for vertical reinforcement, (4) new corrugated cardboard corner braces, and a new, 200 lb. crush-tested corrugated cardboard outer box. For Bullet-proof double boxing™ I use only U-Line® brand packing materials (the best), which are costly and add some extra weight to the package; but this packing method is a highly effective deterrent to postal abuse.

The above are the only shipping options I offer, so PLEASE no haggling after the sale.

Please wait for my invoice.

Payment due 5 days after auction close.

Please DO NOT bid if you cannot or do not intend to pay.***//
