This special pre-holiday no reserve auction is for an extremely scarce date Elgin 6s 14K solid gold hunter pocket watch in near-mint condition. The watch movement dates this rare high end timepiece to 1888 and is only one of 2,000 produced that year! Imagine how few are left in near perfect condition like this one.
Please note the chain pictured is NOT included with the watch. This auction is for the watch only.
The very rare and unusual 14K gold scallop-edged case diameter measures 40mm and is 12mm thick. The movement diameter is 32mm. The watch weighs a heavy 56.8 grams. To determine the approximate gold value in a pocket watch you divide the total weight by three, making the gold value alone in this exquisite antique timepiece at about $340.00! The watch is stem wind and lever set. The lever time set functions perfectly. The wind is silky smooth and it sets and keeps perfect time.
The eleven jewel movement is excellent with a damaskeened finish. It is engraved "Elgin Nat'l. Watch Co. SAFETY PINION 3,096,755" in fine script. The movement number accurately dates this fine pocket watch to 1888. All covers open properly to exactly 90 degrees and snap tightly shut. When held properly, the front cover pops open sharply to 90 degrees when the stem is depressed. The inside of the rear cover is hallmarked "GLATZ WARRANTED 14K U. S. ASSAY NEW YORK-CHICAGO" in a circle. Below that is stamped "31847". The inside of the 14K gold cuvee is stamped "14K 31847". Lastly, the cuvee has a engraved dedication in finely engraved script that reads "Phebe H. Brightman Dec. 18, 1888."
The snow white double sunk porcelain dial is in very good condition, with a few extremely fine spiderlines at the 2 to 3 o'clock position and one very short hairline at the 6 o'clock position. That's the only thing keeping this 121 year old pocket watch from being mint condition. It's in mint condition otherwise. The hands are the original blue steel spade type and are corrosion free. The dial has black Roman numeral time markers with a small sunken second sweep at the bottom. The dial reads "ELGIN" in a shield. The original mineral glass crystal is in excellent condition with no scratching and typical minor pitting.
The entire case has extravagant hand chased leaf and floral decorations. The front cover has a square shield in the center with a very light and fine monogram that can barely be seen. The rear cover has the same square shield in the center with a wonderful flying bird with fully spread wings decoration. What makes this particular watch extra-special is the highly unusual 4mm wide deeply scalloped edge decoration. I've never seen a pocket watch with this type of edge decoration before. It adds an extra dimension of beauty and elegance to an already stunning antique 14K gold pocket watch.
One of the very few remaining out of only 2,000 made in 1888, this elegant antique Elgin 14K solid gold 6s hunter stem wind and lever set pocket watch is offered with no reserve and free shipping in the USA! Paypal, good checks and M. O. cheerfully accepted.
Please note: The chain pictured with the watch is NOT included. This auction is for the watch only.
