the falling leaf design was done by harald hielsen in the early years of the georg gensen silver smithy

harald nielsen (1892-1977) - tradition and renewal
harald nielsen was quite young when he joined georg jensen in 1909 as an engraving apprentice
nevertheless he would soon become the old master's closest practical and artistic collaborator
in fact, jensen had made harald his brother-in-law by marrying his sister johanne
although he originally dreamt of becoming a painter, nielsen soon developed into an artistic innovator and a strong asset to the company
in later years, harald nielsen became the artistic director of the jensen business
he processed workshop drawings by the artists and made them ready for use in the production by ensuring that the technical details were correct
along with johan rohde and jensen himself harald nielsen was highly influential to the artistic direction of the younger silversmiths during the first half of the last century
harald nielsen was a generation younger than the two old masters but he worked with them for a quarter of a century
he learned much from them but maintained his own distinct expression carrying the art nouveau ideal of combining beauty and function into a new age
after the death of georg jensen in 1935 harald nielsen remained dedicated to upholding the artistic spirit of the old master
to the younger generation of artists who invested new life into the old silver smithy after jensen's death, harald nielsen's spiritual and artistic guidance was of immense importance
to nielsen the search for what is clear and simple was the central concern right from the start
he was a pioneer of the functionalist style even before it had really manifested itself
one of his main principles was to never overstress the ornamental element at the cost of the object's function
nielsen's designs are typically characteristic of a simple and delightful art nouveau style - the perfect merging of an awareness of function with a highly artistic sensibility
