Presented for sale is a stunning gentlemans' gold plated Benrus alarm watch dating to around the late 1950's. This fabulous timepiece is in great original condition with no restoration having been carried out whatsoever other than a new crystal and strap. It is VERY collectable. It has a great classic case and the dial has a sweep seconds hand and an alarm arrow marker to set the alarm. The manual movement is running strongly, keeping time and the alarm is working perfectly. The watch is signed in five places, on the dial, case, two crowns and movement. As with all of my watches, authenticity is backed by a full money back guarantee.

The dial is in superb original, unrestored condition. There is hardly a mark on it and no obvious signs of ageing, even when looking at the dial with a jeweller's loupe. It is marked “Benrus Wrist Alarm Swiss Made” and has a starburst satin silver finish with the hours marked by applied gold coloured batons and Arabic numerals. There is an outer minutes chapter and the gold hands are in excellent shape. Having recently been replaced, the crystal is clean and clear, Commensurate with other high end watches, the case is 20 microns gold plated with a stainless steel back and measures approximately 35 mm across, excluding the crown and 42 mm in length. It is signed Benrus and the signed crowns both match. There are,of course, the expected light marks from use over the last fifty years or so, but no obvious signs of wear; in fact the condition is quite remarkable for a watch of this age. The 17 jewelled shock protected manual movement runs strongly and keeps time. The watch is wound and set by the lower crown and the alarm is wound and set by the upper crown. Both functions operate correctly. The watch is fitted with a lightly used Speidel genuine leather strap. This is a fabulous watch in original, fully working condition, highly collectable as well as suitable for wear. Do not miss the opportunity to bid on this great vintage watch.
Benrus History For those who like to know a little of the history of famous watch manufacturers, the Benrus Watch Company was founded in New York in 1921 by three brothers Benjamin, Ralph and Oscar Lazrus, who were Romanian immigrants. The name Benrus was coined by combining the first syllable of Benjamin with the last syllable of Lazrus. The company initially manufactured and assembled the bulk of their watches in Switzerland, where Benrus had a factory. Having produced fairly standard and unexciting contemporary watches up to the start of the Second World War, after it ended Benrus designed and produced many beautiful and unusual designs of watches with fancy bezels and lugs. They are now very collectable. At the beginning of the 1950's Benrus was the third largest watchmaker in the USA, second only to Hamilton, who at one time they nearly acquired. Benrus is remembered for its pioneering and state of the art calendar watch, produced in the 1940's, and later for a range of waterproof watches as well as military watches produced for servicemen fighting in Vietnam. The company was sold to Victor Kiam of Remington Razors in 1967 and sadly, along with other famous names, lost market share due to the advent of the quartz watch and so in 1977 filed for bankruptcy.
