    FACTS ABOUT VIOLIN...

    CONSTRUCTION OF A VIOLIN

When the violin maker starts preparing to make an instrument, he must first of all consider his choice of materials and create a strategy of design. The rough flitches of wood used for the front and back plates are glued together with joints that must last perhaps for hundreds of years. To shape the outline of the thin strips of maple called the ribs, a mould is made which is later removed from the structure. The front and back plates must be worked fairly thin to be able to resonate easily, but because they must also support a lot of tension, they are shaped into a very exact arching. The edges of the thin plates are then reinforced by the inlaying of the purfling which also serves the purpose of adding visual style. Once the outside arching of the plates has been shaped, the hollowing of the inside can begin. The graduation of the plates to the proper thickness along with the cutting of the sound holes and fitting and glueing the bassbar are really the most difficult aspects of violin making. No two pieces of wood have the same properties and must therefore be worked differently every time. The carving of a scroll on the end of the neck of as stringed instrument has a long tradition and probably has symbolic archetypal significance. After the finished instrument has been coated in a glorious veil of tinted varnish, it can be adjusted tonally by means of the sound post and other aspects of the final fitting up.

Here are some very useful measurements of violin family instruments:

    Sizing For Your Violin

Sizing for an appropriate violin is very easy. Have yourself stand up straight with left arm fully outstretched, with no bend in the arm. Then with a tape measure, measure the distance from your sternum (the large central part of the breastbone) to the palm (not fingertips) of the outstretched arm. Then use the following chart to determine which size best suits yourself:

    Measurement Violin Size
    up to 15 inches 1/16
    15 - 16 inches 1/10
    16 - 17.5 inches 1/8
    17.5 - 20 inches 1/4
    20 - 23 inches 1/2
    23 - 25 inches 3/4
    25 or greater inches 4/4

    FITTING UP

The fitting up of the instrument involves the fitting of the sound post, fitting of the bridge, fitting and shaping of the fingerboard, nut and saddle, and the shaping and fitting of the pegs. As each sound post will have to be treated as a unique piece for every instrument and player, so does the bridge have to be fitted and cut to match the musicians personal tastes and the behaviour of the body of the instrument. It is up to the skill of the maker to determine the ideal shape, cut and weight of the bridge for each instrument.

    VIOLIN CARE

A violin is properly made to last for a very long time. It is really quite amazing that some of the earliest works of the master violin makers of Brescia, Italy dating from the early 16th century, are still being used by professional musicians, despite their relatively fragile build. Of course an instrument's life span and healthy condition is directly related to the care taken by it's owners to preserve it. As well as the critical effects of atmospheric changes, various other dangers such as shocks and blows threaten an instrument's health constantly. The owner of a violin can help preserve their instrument by proper cleaning, monitoring cracks and keeping an eye on the general setup. Well fitting pegs induce less wear on the original wood of the pegbox and conscientious owners will periodically check on the state of the bridge, tailpiece, saddles and fingerboard. Perhaps most important though, is consulting a skilled violin maker.

    VIOLIN SETUP

One of the things that allows an instrument to sound with maximum efficiency and quality is the way in which it is set up. The term "set-up" implies several variables, including: The elevation, or the distance from the surface of the front to an imaginary continuation of the level of the fingerboard. The elevation defines the angle of the strings over the bridge and consequently affects the force exerted on the front of the instrument by the strings. The distance of the strings from the fingerboard, influencing playability and resistance. Other aspects of the set-up include, the shape and height of the saddle and nut, distance between strings and choice of strings. The aspects of the set-up which have a direct and dramatic influence on the sound and playability of the instrument are: The cut of the bridge the position tightness and fit of the sound post, the string height above the fingerboard and the choice and/or condition of the strings. image 6
