Barbara Mandrell became a household name in 1980, when the perky blonde dynamo won the Country Music Association's Entertainer of the Year award and began hosting her own prime-time musical variety show on NBC. Barbara Mandrell & the Mandrell Sisters pulled in 40 million viewers a week, as Barbara, Louise, and Irlene sang, danced, and joked their way to stardom. Collectively, they played at least a dozen instruments. Barbara, in her role as the assertive older sister, guided and encouraged her siblings – Louise, the misunderstood middle child, and Irlene, the ditzy wide-eyed kid sister with a whim of iron and a heart of gold. Country music's biggest stars appeared on the program and regularly joined the Mandrells for a rousing medley of inspirational songs to close the show. Barbara's band, the Do-Rites, provided the musical support, with comic spot duty assigned to Truck Shackley & the Texas Critters, the life-size Krofft puppet country pickers. Barbara Mandrell & the Mandrell Sisters ran for only two seasons. Barbara called it quits in 1982, admitting that the grueling TV production schedule coupled with her live concert dates had created health issues. She conquered the world of network television, achieving success that exceeded her immense popularity in the world of country music.
