BIG Victorian Davidson Pearline Vaseline Opalescent UV Glass Dish

Description

This fabulous and unusually large piece of Victorian glass comes from my own personal collection, and is in excellent condition. This type of glass is called Pearline in the UK, opalescent glass in the US, and Vaseline glass in Australia, but its method of manufacture is the same on each continent: the glass has in it an arsenic compound that turns milky white when that part of it (in this case the top) is presented again to the heat soon after being pressed out. Pieces of this glass are especially valued by collectors because it required great skill to reintroduce the piece to the heat at exactly the right time to prevent breakage.

This particular pattern was made by famous UK glass company George Davidson & Sons, who called the colour Primrose Pearline. The pattern was introduced in 1890 and was never actually registered as a design, but it is commonly called “Richelieu” by collectors. Articles in this pattern do not have the Lion trademark, as its use by Davidson was stopped just prior to this pattern being introduced. Surviving pieces of Primrose Pearline tend to be the smaller dishes, this is an unusually large example, and therefore very scarce.

Dimensions

The bowl measures 23.5 cms (9 1/4 inches) in diameter, and is 5.5 cms (2 ½ inches) deep.

Condition

The glass has no chips or cracks. There are the usually manufacturing flaws found in this very old pressed glass: straw marks/creases and a small burst out air bubble on the bottom rim: neither detract or affect the value for the collector.
