I cut all my bowl blanks individually from logs. These blanks are hollowed into thick bowls and waxed and dated. They are then put away to dry for at least a year. When they are seasoned they are put back on the lathe and turned to their final shape and sanded. All of my bowls and vases are made from dry, cured bowl blanks to prevent cracking or warping.
MY WORK IS OFFERED IN 2 STYLES...
THE “GALLERY” OR “G“ BOWL which are gallery quality. The luster of the finish has to be seen to be appreciated, and has been compared to the finish on a Steinway piano. I use my best bowl blanks for these bowls. They are identified on the bottom with a G burned into it. Bowls which I consider particularly nice are given a “+” designation after the “G” and become “G+“ pieces. Often it will be because their figure, color, shape or design are particularly attractive
I WILL OCCASIONALLY DO A G++ BOWL. I ONLY DO A VERY FEW OF THESE. The common characteristic for all of them is their size. Because they are so large I had to turn them off the outboard or back side of my lathe. Even though I have the one of the best and biggest lathes available the custom attachments for outboard turning were the only way to complete these. Some begin as 200 lb. blocks of wood. A tree capable of yielding a bowl of this size is rare…especially with good figure and soundness. Drying the rough bowls is difficult…many crack. Turning bowls this large is difficult and hazardous. One wrong move can destroy the bowl, damage equipment and injure the operator. Only certain pieces are worth the risk and sometimes I question that.
THE “PERIOD” OR “P” BOWL. These bowls are made from the same dried roughed out blanks as my “G“ bowls but I spend less time on the finishing. Occasionally slight tool marks are left visible as typical in early bowls. These bowls are not as intensively sanded as my “G” bowls and have a soft, smooth, glowing semi-gloss finish. Particularly nice ones are given a “+” designation after the “P” and become “P+“ pieces. They are probably better bowls than most people have ever seen.
In a newspaper article on David Walsh, David Dennis, a retail buyer for the Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian said “Walsh is one of his top vendors”. Dennis, who is amazed at how light Walsh’s bowls are, said his bowls sell between $60 and $200 but the highly figured larger bowls have sold between $300 and $800.
Photos are of the actual piece. Photos appearing after that of the bottom of the piece showing wood, number and signature are those taken around the studio or on site recovery operations. PLEASE! Use a ruler to help you determine its size as the photos do not show that.
