This popular ethnic design was inspired by ancient Mayan stone artwork, and features a black snake against a turquoise blue background with red and tan markings. The white is the natural color of the shell.
The pin is a small rectangular shape, measuring 1-1/2 x 1 inch. It has a good quality locking nickel pinback clasp with a low rise. The matching earrings measure 3/4 inch square. They are secured by a sterling silver eyepin and are hanging from sterling silver French earwires.
This unusual jewelry is hand-made from a real ostrich shell. I design each piece individually using a beeswax and dye process similar to batik. The back of the shell is filled, and the front is coated, both with a clear hard finish to strengthen the shell and enhance the colors. After the design is finished I cut and shape the shell piece, and fashion it into the beautiful jewelry that you see here.
This jewelry is fairly sturdy (similar to ceramic), and will not break easily with regular use, although I do not recommend immersing it in water. Each piece is signed by the artist (me) and comes in a gift box.
Enchanted Hen Egg Art is produced in my home studio in the Sacramento Mountains of New Mexico.
