| | Album notes | Blessid Union Of Souls: Eliot Sloan (vocals, piano); Jeff Pence (guitar, programming, samples, background vocals); C.P. "Charly" Roth (keyboards, bass, drums, programming, samples); Eddie Hedges (drums, percussion). Additional personnel includes: Curt Benton (guitar, harmonica); Ted Karras (guitar); Paul Patterson (violin); Kevin Hupp (drums, percussion); Mike Starr, Matt Senatore (background vocals). Recorded at Ligosa Sound, Cincinnati, Ohio. Includes liner notes by Eliot Sloan. Blessid Union Of Souls is a multi-cultural quartet that plays acoustic-based, rural-flavored soul. Spiritual but not preachy, the Souls' music presents a strong social consciousness with a genre-busting style that incorporates gospel, hip-hop, psychedelia and folk. Think of Arrested Development with blistering rock guitars, strings and R&B harp. These are mostly love songs--to women, for humanity, and even, in the blues-drenched "Oh Virginia," to a state. But they're love songs with a social conscience and an inspirational point of view. "I Believe" deals with interracial love. "Nora," which carries a musical hint of early Elton John, eulogizes singer Eliot Sloan's grandmother. With rich, whole harmonies, the group's vocals suit a great range of styles, never sounding forced. On HOME, the Souls' sincerity runs from every zealous note they sing right down to their very personal liner notes.
| | Editorial reviews | ...This Cincinnati quartet shares an evolved sense of self with Des'ree, a psychedelic vision with P.M. Dawn, and the unplugged feel of Hootie & the Blowfish. Among the meditative songs are a few foot-stompers that actually make twangy guitars and bluesy harmonicas seem cool again... - Rating: A- Entertainment Weekly (04/21/1995)
3 Stars - Good - ...An earnestness recalling Hootie and the Blowfish and the sunnier Lenny Kravitz stamps this fresh Cincinnati foursome. They're emphatic good-news guys wielding wicked chops... Rolling Stone (06/01/1995)
