The Isthmus Zapotecs are a surprisingly progressive people who live in the region of Oaxaca in Mexico. Over a 10-year stretch directors Maureen Gosling and Ellen Osborne filmed the Isthmus Zapotecs and learned how their rules about gender equality have produced some powerful women with a keen eye for running businesses. Gosling makes it abundantly clear that the women most definitely wear the pants in this society, and although they live an oft-troubled existence, the people generally have an endearingly cheery outlook on life.
