This no reserve auction is for a true primitive ovoid stoneware jug c1830. In pristine as-made condition, this is a small highly collectible one gallon jug with a primitive blue cobalt swirl decoration. It's original oversized hand carved wooden stopper in included. It has a crude yet wonderfully formed applied handle with a deep ridge running down the middle and the typical deep three-thumbprint pressed mark at the base of the handle. I believe this primitive jug to be of New Jersey origin since it was obtained at a New Jersey auction back in 1979. Of course it also could have another New England state origin.

Though it's of very early origin, the ovoid shape was expertly turned with the jug having a single incised ridge ring  encircling the shoulder. There are remnants of a very light sweet aroma of molasses or similar content when you sniff the spout. The entire jug has an even coat of salt glaze that shows light age wear but retains that light pebbly texture that collectors vie for. The entire piece has an untouched light brown aged patina that is warm and inviting. The base retains an old sticker that reads "CASTNER AUCTION BRANCHVILLE, N. J. 7/19/79 HELEN CONWELL'S STONEWARE". Apparently this piece came from the collection of a Helen Conwell who labeled all her pieces so she knew where she got them! I'll leave it on for you to remove if desired...

Condition: Absolutely pristine. The blue cobalt swirl is faded from age but has no frying. There is not the tiniest fleabite anywhere on this magnificent example!

Dimensions: 11 1/4" high to top of rim with a small 4 3/4" base. Spout diameter is 1 3/4". Applied handle is 5 1/2". Original hand carved wooden stopper is 2 7/8" high.
