This no reserve auction is for a beautiful antique blue cobalt repeating leaf decorated fruit or storage jar. This fresh to market antique was part of a long standing estate collection. It comes to you in a highly desired small size that can be displayed just about anywhere you please. I was able to obtain many outstanding examples that will be listed over the coming days and weeks. This beautifully decorated antique 11" high stoneware fruit jar is no exception!

 This richly decorated stoneware jar is of Northeast origin and dates to the early 19th century c1830. It was made from a high quality grey stoneware, pointing to Massachusetts or possibly Maryland origin. It's early origin and primitive nature is easily evident in the primitive four repeating deep blue cobalt leaf decorations. The body of the piece is cylyndrical in form with a narrowly tapered shoulder. There is a finely incised double ring encircling the jar right at the shoulder. There's also a matching incised double ring encircling the base of the piece.

The salt glaze was thickly applied over the entire piece including the base, leaving a wonderfully pebbled texture and shiny aged patina that collectors vie for. The thickly applied deep almost transparent blue cobalt is gorgeous. It features four large 3 1/2" long repeating decorations that are primitive in design and I believe were intended to resemble leaves. The decoration covers the top third of the jar. There is no frying to the four beautiful deep blue cobalt decorations except for one that appears to be more of a spot where the jar was left up against another in the kiln. The deep blue cobalt decoration contrasts very well with the even high quality grey stoneware. This primitive piece was obviously made by an early period potter.

 This outstanding antique fruit/storage jar is in excellent condition. There are no chips, nips, fleabites, cracks, or repairs. The rim and base are perfect. There is one superfine hairline running fron near the base to about 3/4 of the way up the side. It is so fine it can barely be seen and cannot be felt with a fingernail. The piece has none of the expected natural potstone marks normally found in early stoneware. The piece is chock full of crudity and character with a personality all it's own...
