When building a modified engine, it's important to use the highest quality parts and materials. Each component is subjected to extreme temperature and stress conditions. Compression ratio increases as well as high boost levels of turbos or superchargers cause the head gasket to be one of the components most stressed in a modified engine. BMP design racing head gaskets are designed and manufactured to help cope with these conditions. They are constructed from Kevlar-reinforced material with a double inner core of stainless steel. The water jackets and ports are all sealed with a silicone bead which adds protection from water leakage due to expansion during thermal cycling. However the most important feature is the solid stainless steel alloy cutting ring, manufactured from a special stainless steel alloy with a width of up to 5.0mm. The top of this ring has a small cutting blade machined into the ring. This ring actually cuts into the aluminum cylinder head, creating a seal that is nearly leak proof. Original equipment head gaskets are typically designed with a thin, wrap around (.35mm) foil barrier at the edge of the head gasket which is exposed to the combustion chamber. This offers very little protection against combustion chamber blow by. The stock head gaskets are typically 1.75-1.8mm thick. For stock compression applications, we offer a 1.8mm gasket. For modified, turbo or supercharged engines we also offer a 2.0mm thick gasket which will drop compression slightly. These 2.0mm thick head gaskets are also excellent for use in cases where the cylinder head has had to be machined beyond limits. The extra thickness can often allow continued use of an otherwise "out-of-limit" (trash) cylinder head, by restoring stock compression ratio conditions.
