putting up with 30 below temperatures worth it..

I have doodled ever since I was a kid. In fact, doodling and
daydreaming always stood in the way of my learning. I was always made to
sit in the corner with a Dunce cap by the nuns for my failure to "pay
attention and learn". I learned early on that mockery of the nuns would
grant me quite a bit of detention and extra doodling time.
I won my first award at the age of twelve in a Los Angeles Catholic
school I attended. That was the year my mother couldn't afford the
expense of private school tuition, so my brother and I became latchkey
kids that year. I was handed paper, pencils and pastels, and he and I
would endlessly copy drawings from an old Leonardo Da Vinci book
to occupy our time. Drawing, building war dioramas, and three card monty
would pass our time pretty quickly...
I have no formal training other than a few art classes in high-school. I
went to Memorial High-School and the crib notes I would sell to fellow
students for pizza money were always in demand. Funny, I never got
caught cheating. I also went to college for two years, then my guidance
counselor informed me that I had to take courses other than art to
graduate, so I quit.
I wish I had an impressive list of degrees, but I don't.
So
what's the point to this story?
Too bad we had no Nintendo at the time...life would have been much
funner.
I've always excelled at pencil portraits but now that I'm older and
going blinder by the minute, I have found that acrylics and oils are
much easier on my eyes. What would take me weeks to complete a pencil
drawing, takes only hours with acrylics. I still work in pencil on
occasion, but mostly for family members.
If not for the straight A's in art classes, I would probably still be in
high-school.
Here are some drawings I did in
sixth grade. Done in pencil on paper...
Thanks so much for taking a peek at my
work. Good luck and happy bidding!
