This shallow dish is a fab runners up silver trophy from 1931. Awarded to LIEUT F.G. O'DWER of the ROYAL INISKILLING FUSILIERS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Inniskilling_Fusiliers) following a Heavyweight Officers bout.
In 1892 the Army Boxing Association was formed, followed by the Royal Navy in 1895 and the RAF in 1919.
I have been assured by the previous owner that it is made from solid silver, but I must stress that it has not been tested. It seemed a shame to spoil such a lovely old item by scratching through the top surface and then leaving a nasty patch of discolouration once the nitric acid has done it's work! I am rather relying on my belief that you experts out there will probably already know if second place was rewarded by the ABA with a silver-plated medal and mount, or with the real thing? I suspect the latter is more probable.
Everyone that has seen or handled it is convinced that it is solid silver, but I will let you decide. Either way it is still an extremely collectable old Boxing Trophy and has additional interest of featuring such a great regiment.
Measures 5.5" in diameter by 3/4" high and weighs 214g (7 1/2 ounces)
