| This is not a print A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ORIGINS AND ART OF BRASS RUBBINGS This is a hand made rubbing, using a copper wax compound on special white rag paper. This beautifully decorated woodcut is based upon a design from the Book of Durrow, written in the late 7th century. The Book of Durrow was composed at the monastery of Durrow in Ireland, which was founded in the 6th century by St. Columba. The decoration consists largely of pages of interlace patterns. Each of the four Gospels begins with a decorative initial, preceded by an illuminated 'carpet' page, such as the one on which the design was based. I will include with this rubbing a copy of the Historical Notes, published by The London Brass Rubbing Centre, that details this rubbing and the many others the center has in their exhibition. The rubbing is from an exhibition featured at The Washington National Cathedral by The London Brass Rubbing Centre and more recently has been on a National tour as part of their brass rubbing workshop. Rubbings like this, hand made by one of their craft instructors, make unusual and interesting gifts. We will send it to you rolled up in a strong postal tube. The paper size is 24" long X 15" wide. It can be hung either from wooden dowels or matted and framed under glass. Rubbings like this are not easy to photograph and appear somewhat distorted and uneven in colour. In fact this is rectangular in shape and evenly rubbed in both the silver and gold wax colours. |
