The surfaces are clean and straight with moderate wear to the corners and ends of the spine. Some creasing is noted, one bearly worn through corner but no tears, fraying or fabric loss, in all, quite a lovely copy..
The interior reveals contents to be clean and firmly bound. There is a 2 inch crack to the top of the hinge paper only with a discreet mend. Age toning is modest considering the age, no foxing noted. One stamped previous owner name appears in the upper free corner of the front paste down. "F.W.SABIN.". There are no further previous owner indications, notations, marks, creases or tears.
"This book has been written in the intervals of a laborious occupation, from the stand-point of a patriotic Hawaiian, for the young people of this country rather than for foreign readers. This fact will account for its local coloring, and for the prominence given to certain topics of local interest. Especial pains have been taken to supply the want of a correct account of the ancient civil polity and religion of the Hawaiian race." -- W.D. Alexander – PREFACE excerpt
Mr. Alexander has divided his book into three parts: Part I. Prehistoric Period, Part II. To the Death of Kamehameha I, and Part III. Later History. Each of these Parts is divided further into chapters and he has included a very extensive itemization of the topics contained therein in his tablet of Contents. There are seven color maps, several of which are double page and display the districts via contrasting colors. These maps are extensively detailed and include topographical enhancements. The illustrations, of which there are 33, are also indexed in the front. (This 1st Edition features a frontispiece of Her Majesty Queen Liliuokalani who was at the time of publication still the reining Monarch. Other illustrations include some b/w photographs, but mostly line type sketches. Throughout the text, the high points of the table of Contents are displayed in bold lettering, which makes this volume readily useable as a reference guide.
"Distilling.—The art of distilling was introduced by some Botany Bay convicts before the year 1800. It is said to have been first practiced here by a William Stevenson, from New South Wales." - (excerpt page 157)
"During this year mosquitoes, hitherto unknown in the islands, were introduced at Lahaina by the ship Wellington, from San Blas, Mexico." (excerpt page 195, date of reference 1826)
The author has provided an extensive section of Appendixes, which include islands sizes, populations, distances, tables of historical events, tables of royal families descendents, lists of those having held public office or judicial position and a detailed Chronological Table of Events commencing in the 16th century to 1900.
A BRIEF HISTORY of the HAWAIIAN PEOPLE is a lovely old volume that contains a tremendous amount of information. Truly the author succeeded in presenting a wealth of knowledge in a simple, straightforward manner. A very successful book in its day, it was modified as required to address the changes secondary to the overthrow of the Monarchy and reprinted in significant numbers, copyright dated 1899. In recent years, A BRIEF HISTORY of the HAWAIIAN PEOPLE has again been issued in paperback format to meet the demand, with attractive old 1st editions such as this, still in solid, usable condition, becoming truly rare. It would make a wonderful reference for someone doing historical work and also be a prized addition to a Hawaiiana collection.
