BROMO SELTZER DISPNSR EMERSON DRUG ANTIQUE BLUE GLASS

• Bromo Seltzer was created by "Captain" Isaac E. Emerson in 1888 as his idea of a headache medicine. He dispensed it to people in his drug store in Baltimore, Maryland. He organized Emerson Drug Co. in 1891. Bromo Seltzer first sold in Blue Glass Bottles manufactured by Cumberland Glass Co. in Bridgeton, New Jersey and /or Hazel-Atlas.  Later Emerson, through his own company, started a glass factory called Maryland Glass. In 1956 Maryland Glass merged with Warner-Lambert Pharmaceutical Co. of Morris Plains, New Jersey which is now part of Pfizer. The Emerson Bromo Seltzer Tower, Baltimore, Maryland was built in 1911 and remained the tallest building in Baltimore until 1923.

This Bromo Seltzer Dispenser came from an old time Drugstore that started in 1884. The dispenser is all original and measures approximately 16 1/4" high.  The Glass is empty and sold for antique collectible value only.

BASE OF DISPENSER:  Bottom underside of base is marked "THE EMERSON DRUG CO. OF BALTIMORE CITY MARYLAND" with company emblem and measures approximately 4 1/2" x 6".  Base also marked "PAT. NO. 1.772.377

Base appears to be made out of metal except for turn knob.  Front edge of base shows remains of where something appears to have been taped on, portion of top of base shows some discoloration where paint has faded

COBALT BLUE GLASS:  Blue Glass Bottles were the first glass manufactured to dispense Bromo Seltzer. The Blue Glass measures approximately 8" high.  Embossed on bottom rim of glass is, "BROMO-SELTZER EMERSON DRUG CO."  Embossed on bottom of glass is, "M" within a round cirlcle

RARE FIND !

ORIGINAL LABEL:  There are other dispensers that come up for bid but we have not seen one that has the original lable. The paper label fell off of the glass by itself. Over the years the glue that was used at the time the label was put on dryed out.   Paper label yellowed with age. Label measures approximately 3 1/2" x 3 1/2". Printing is very readable and complete.  The following is a small portion of what is printed on the label:

"Net Weight 12 ozs, Trade Mark Reg.U.S.Pat.Off., Control No. 2453, The Emerson Drug Company of Baltimore City Maryland"

CONDITION:  Condition is Good considering the age. Glass is in good condition, no cracks or hairline cracks no chips that we can see
