With a major R&B hit in the title song and three Grammy nominations (and one Grammy) in two years, FOR THE COOL IN YOU is the album that put Babyface the singer on the same map as Babyface the producer. He and partner L.A. Reid first made a name for themselves as producers/songwriters adept at balancing the bright snap of modern keyboards with the warmth of old-fashioned acoustic instruments, and their continuing string of R&B productions is a fantastically smooth and silky thread: Toni Braxton's "Breathe Again," TLC's "Red Light Special," Madonna's "Take A Bow."
Babyface's own albums are no different, thought perhaps a bit more low-key. "For The Cool In You" celebrates a lover who keeps a cool head through romantic crises; "Saturday" promises a weekend night not of wining and dining but of chilling and mellowing "with you by my side"; "A Bit Old-Fashioned" is so purely devotional that it almost sounds alien in the modern world of thrust-and-parry sex jams. These are self-assured, middle-of-the-road rhythm and blues songs, with quiet hooks and silky beats, and Babyface sings them in a voice that is all feeling and no flash. He knows how to play the crooning game. And when he goes all-acoustic on "When Can I See You," you may not even notice the change, because throughout FOR THE COOL IN YOU the emotions are unplugged even when the instruments aren't.

...Babyface...has always had a soft spot for soulful ballads and smoothly stylish love songs. He indulges that passion here... - Rating: B+ Entertainment Weekly (08/20/1993)
...when one has infectious melodies, complex chord progressions, car-drive grooves, and bell-clear tones to offer, who needs metaphorical lyrics? Some singers, thank God, still have more than phat beats and sampled loops working in their f(l)avor... Vibe (09/01/1993)
