The Super Major was the last in the of E1A series of tractors produced from 1951 to 1964 at Dagenham, England. All of these tractors are first class. They are built like an Iowa class battleship and this one weighs in at about 6 tons because of its rear wheel weights.
These tractors are reliable, easy to start, strong pullers, easy to work on, economical, and parts are readily available. This tractor was made in 61 or 62. The previous owner was a gentleman from New Jersey. I have owned this machine for 3 years.
This Fordson Super Major tractor serial number 1610199 has a 52hp diesel engine and a Ford series 712 front end loader serial number 6774, and a Ford series 713 backhoe serial number 4302. It does not have any gauges or frills like a closed cab but this hard working machine runs great and can dig and trench all day. It has an unknown number of hours, however the engine and transmission are in great working order. The engine has lots of low end torque and only sips fuel. It has a new battery and starter solenoid and it starts well and runs great with no excess smoke or noise. It is a 2 wheel drive with a 3 speed manual and both a high and low range for a total of six speeds.
The rear tires have good tread and the rear wheels are equipped with wheel weights. The front tires are turf tires with good tread. The brakes are ok.
The front loader works well and its large bucket is very useful for moving large amounts of materials quickly. The loader is also equipped with removable forklift attachment.
The machine is tight and has been well maintained and cared for, it does have a couple of wet spots, a very minor fuel drip from the fuel filter, but my mechanic said that won’t affect the performance of the engine and its no big deal. This machine is equipped with power steering and a new hydraulic steering ram, but the power steering pump will need to be replaced. The hydraulics are in good working order with one new hose last year, and the hydraulic pump was replaced about 50 hours ago and is in excellent working order. It has a live PTO..
The backhoe has a 16 foot reach, as measured from the rear stabilizer to the teeth of the bucket. The backhoe works perfectly and this machine can dig! It is rated to dig to at least 12 feet, and I would imagine it could trench even deeper. This is a big powerful backhoe! This machine has rear hydraulic stabilizers and coupled with the front loader and the rear wheel weights make this a very stable digging platform.
The machine is ready to work and its medium size makes it capable of tackling bigger jobs like septic tanks, trenching, and foundations yet its maneuverable enough to get into confined spaces.
