Bata, a showmaker to the world
By Thomas J. Bata with Sonja Sinclair
Bata Shoemaker to the World is the story of the man, his family and their business. Eloquently told and rich in anecdotes, it traces the road from the Bata family's humble beginnings in a Moravian village to Tom's undisputed claim to the title of shoemaker of the world.
From the Author:
Being the only son of a legendary father can be a mixed blessing. On the minus side, there is an enormous weight of expectations, along with a sometimes frustrating struggle to acquire one's own identity, away from the parent's shadow.
When the son is successful, he is perceived as a chip off the old block; when he makes a mistake, he has failed to measure up to the father's standards. Fortunately, in my case, these liabilities have always been far outweighed by pride in my father's accomplishments and by my determination to enhance, to the best of my ability, the tradition he created.
I have had to come to terms with may traumatic events: the subjugation of my homeland first by Nazi Germany and then by a Communist regime, the loss by expropriation of everything Father had created in Czechoslovakia and other "socialist" countries, the injustice and humiliation inflicted on some of our most loyal employees, a painful family rift, the political and economic roller coaster the organization has ridden in carious parts of the world. Adjusting to these changes wasn't easy. But adjust we did, which is one of the reasons why the enterprise that my son heads today is vastly different from the one my father left behind in 1932.
One of the most difficult challenges faced by chief executives is knowing when and how to respond to genuine changes in the business environment while ignoring fads that are temporary and therefore inconsequential. My life story is essentially an account of how I tried to face that challenge.
