Baule Baoule 3 BELL Antique Bronze Anklet SET
Old African Currency Tribal Jewelry Cote d'Ivoire

18th C. Original Matched Set of Baule Akan Antique Bronze Bell Anklets
Old African Currency Bracelet Pair Traditional Primitive Money Cote d'Ivoire

Collected from the: Baule Baoule peoples of the Cote d'Ivoire region of West Africa
Material: Bronze, old lost wax casting of copper/tin alloy
Period: 18th century
Dimensions: 6" outer diameter, 2.5" width, 1.5" thick at center bell; combined weight is 2.40 pounds
Condition: Exceptional - no damage or repair, exquisite signs of age and wear from extensive tribal use. Held in private collection, the condition of this pair remains unchanged from the time of their original 1940's field acquisition. Blandin indicates that objects of this form were likely very early trade items cast in Europe from molds created from earlier indigenous sets found among the Akan and early Baule/Akan. All bells retain their original iron rattle pebbles and continue to produce a delightful tinkling sound. Minute, intricate designs are brought to life by a heavy encrustation that suggests lengthy burial and sacrificial libations - a truly spectacular set !

Baule Anklet Currency Bracelets
"These bracelets, certainly Akan, are different from those that we saw on the previous pages. The No 2 notably is the same type that some copies, of very old import, factories in Europe on models probably of Ashanti origin, as the exemplary No 1 page 266. These two copies are of local manufacture. An exam deepened of these two bracelets, whose numbers 1 have the green patina sinks decorated very old, watch that they were molds on industrial shapes, probably in Europe. The number 2 present some likeness with the bracelets Dan-hardly have bells, from it however even of his/her/its bells that come closer above of those of the No 1 and of the No 1 page 264 incites us to think that this object was to the Akans." Metal content alone, then combined with casting quality indicate that this set is an early pair indeed. See Blandin's Bronzes et Autres Alliages.

Baule Baoule Tribal History
"The Baule represent one of the most important tribes of the Cote d'Ivoire. Their name is testimony to their birth - according to legend, Queen Aba Pokou led her people on an exodus towards the gold mining areas during the 18th century and had to cross a river where she was obliged to sacrifice her oldest son to the river god, thus giving her people the name Bauli, 'the son is dead'. During the 19th century, the queendom disintegrated due to internal conflicts and by the beginning of the 20th century, when the French colonials arrived, they found only a network of villages, headed by councils of venerated men.", according to Bacquart. The Baule are known for their figurative carvings of statues and masks, along with their figurative decoration of everyday objects such as doors, boxes, heddle pulleys, drum tappers, and gold and bronzes pendants which clearly display a strong influence from their Akan ancestry.
