Beaded Blue Silk Antique Vintage Victorian Dress Gown

Truly wonderful antique/vintage gown/dress from the 1890s, late Victorian era. This was sold to me as an Aesthetic dress (I recommend googling it, but briefly, it was sort of an "alternative" clothing and lifestyle movement in the late 1800s where garments were more free flowing and life itself less rigid). I don't have any proof to say for sure the dress is in fact an example of Aesthetic costume or not, but it is slightly unusual for the era regardless. Sky blue color shifting silk taffeta, in some lights looking like a slate grey-blue and in other lights more like a blue/green ocean-y hue. The bodice is gathered and vertically pleated both front and back, with a ruffled collar of the same material. Slightly raised waistline. Ballooning sleeves are half-length, with ruffled cuffs and more tightly fitted interiors. Clear and silvery glass beadwork trim the center front and back necklines, run around the waist, and around the sleeve cuffs. The skirt is long and full, not really "shaped" except for a slight downwards flair. There is a ruffle of the same silk around the hem, and the underside of the hem has a tan velveteen dust ruffle. Fully lined: the bodice is lined in a black garland printed fine brown cotton while the skirt is lined in solid brown cotton. The bodice is also boned, and there are some nice finishing details to the bodice and skirt and lots of hand stitching. No tags or labels, nothing on the inside waistband. Closure is up the front with hidden hooks and eyes.

Condition is very good. This is very displayable and quite sturdy. Due to its age though and relative scarcity, I caution against actually trying to wear this. I didn't see any holes, tears, splits or shatter to the silk nor to the cotton lining or the velveteen floor duster. Some of the beadwork sections (as opposed to individual beads, those are all stable) are starting to come loose, but can be reattached by hand. It looks like there were once faux pearls in the centers of some of the sections and they are now missing, you don't really notice this until you inspect it up close though and they could be replaced. The underarms have light browning right along the seams, this is not seen when the sleeves are down though. There are also faint water stains on the sleeves and collar ruffles that are well disguised by the color-shifting nature of the fabric itself. The skirt has a few more darker spots/stains that are a bit more apparent: there are a couple brown spots each about the size of a thumb tip in the pleats of the waistband (some hidden by the pleats, others sometimes visible depending on how you are looking at the dress); as well as a couple more scattered below that are smaller and lighter. There is also some darker brown discoloration to the material near the waistband and in a section about midway down, again because of the material itself this isn't always apparent. The front closes up fine, I just couldn't show it closed in the photos as my mannequin was too large-the very last picture is of the front bodice closed up (it looks just like the back).

Was originally intended for a small woman (the length suggests that it was for an adult and not a child/teenager). Actual measurements of the dress are: 30" bust, 24" waist, 12" shoulders to raised waist, 41" waist to hem.
