A superb Indian ivory carving of a dancing lady Sri Devi or Sri Lakshmi or Parvati Shiva's consort. This is the best work from the 1860 - 1880's Anglo Indian period possibly Goa goanese or possibly British Bombay. Large 6.5 inches. The work is so high quality it may be attributable, see S. Carey Welch India Art and Culture 1300-1900 pg 442 Fig. 293 for a fine similar carving style of a Parsi girl ca 1875 in the Prince of Wales Museum (National Museum). Unfortunately there are a few losses to the piece, namely the arm and two of her flowing robes. The tassels and under feet all show glued repairs with a non modern glue. the arm originally crossed straight down at a 45 degree angle across her right breast (the carving shows this as there is a tiny blank in decor where the carver could not reach. The arm was drilled and pegged for repair but was relost. This was originally absolutely all from one piece. Note the tiny cords that still sutvive. A skilled carver might match the arm, or cast a resin replacement, however the piece is still impressive and graceful as is. The face and torso shows radiant flesh in the skilled carving, accentuated a mellow patina. Museum quality work. Probably had an ebony base.
