Here is a rare find for the Bible Collector:
There
are many harmonies of the gospels, but this one is quite unique. The
author was the son of a Baptist preacher, was apparently completely
self taught by use of his father's Greek books and Hebrew and Greek
Grammars and Lexicons he obtained from bookstores. He was 63 years
old when this book was published in 1965. I could find no history of
this man on the internet, but I presumed he has expired by this time.
From
what I read in the Introduction and Explanation at the beginning of
the book it was easy to see Presser had a deep love of the Bible and
studied it intensely. What is surprising is he was not very good at
expressing his thoughts in English. The sentence structure seems to
go is unpredictable directions, so you have to go back and re-read to
get the sense of what he is saying.
Once
you get into his translation it gets much better because he has the
structure of the Greek to guide him. The text is reminiscent of King
James with thee, thou and ye, etc. I get the sense that this is a
very literal work, and the author was strongly influenced by his
lifetime experience with the KJV.
This
is obviously a self-published work, and this is the first edition,
first printing. There many typos in the text, and there has been
numerous corrections in red ink throughout the work. There are also
many editorial changes and words crossed out. The only name in the
book is the signature of the author inside the front cover. My
suspicion is that this was the personal copy of the author, and he
himself made the changes, either for a friend, or in preparation for
the next edition. Like he was using it as a draft copy.
I
have been a collector of English Bible translations for many years,
but I am downsizing and selling all but a very few translations that
I actively use. It is my hope that these Bibles will be put to better
use than taking up shelf space. I have about 29 yet to list!
Thanks
for your interest.
