Bill Ward (1919-1978) is acknowledged as having created some of the sexiest girls in cartooning ever. Responsible for the famous good girl Torchy comics of the '40s and '50s, as well as a large output of risque comic gag joke panels, he also illustrated one of the more memorable Overstreet Price Guides, and in the instance of this splash page, made one of his few forays into a complete story with one of his famous, fantastically endowed women.
Appearing in "The Adventures of Pussycat", a one-shot that appeared in 1968 with stories that were later reprinted in men's magazines, this splash page is from a story about an ultra sexy secret agent named "Pussycat". Visible in this page is the 60's fascination with secret agents and men's culture and clearly shows the influence of features like Harvey Kurtzman's and Will Elder's Little Annie Fannie.
1968 was a time of turmoil but also was the height of the "sexual revolution", allowing sexy comics to move from behind the counter to the magazine rack. A very fun large format page that clearly illustrates Ward's talent. Ward's work justifiably continues to accrue recognition.
The cover of Pussycat #1 is shown for reference and is not included with the original art being offered in this auction.
