Originally published in about 1920, the Bilt Well Millwork Catalog number 40 is THE definitive reference for period millwork, built-ins, doors and windows, and architectural details. This book was published when kit houses were being published by Sears, Montgomery Wards, William Radford Company, and others. These were done mostly in the style of Arts & Crafts Bungalows, four square houses, cottages, and early ranch style houses. |

This catalog was distributed to builders, hardware stores, architectural firms, large department stores, and to individuals interested in building.
In addition to millwork, a wide assortment of architectural details are covered from box beams, doors and sashes, stained glass, interior balustrades, stairways, porch components, built in furniture, entire kitchens, etc. Enough information is provided for your home restoration or new home design needs.
"When you say a house is English, or Colonial, or Modern—when you speak of a home as hospitable, or cold, or cozy—when you describe the dwelling, your words are influenced and largely by the millwork, both exterior and interior.
And today, with build-in equipment at so high a state of development, you may call a home convenient and easy to keep—or the opposite—depending upon the built-in features. More important now than ever before has the selection millwork thus become.
"A home may be brick, wood, stone, or stucco, it may be a compact two-story structure or a spreading one-floor bungalow as the owner may choose, but the beauty and convenience of that home will be largely determined by the selection of the millwork." - Introduction -
