In Iceland and most parts of northern Europe this is the commonest pipit. It is a migrant and breeds on open moorland and grassland. It us an abundant breeding bird and can often be seen in large groups until late September. There is no distinction between the male and the female. The meadow pipit lays 5-7 eggs. Widespread and numerous in most of Europe. 7-12 million breeding pairs across Europe, more common in the north. Whimbrel – Numenius phaeopus
Whimbrels are easily recognized by their down-curved bills. In flight their small size and quick wing beats are the best ways of separating them from curlews, unless they call. Winters on muddy estuaries and rocky shores. It is widespread as a breeding bird in Iceland, Scandinavia, the Baltic states and the Shetlands. Elsewhere they are seen on passage, usually in relatively small numbers in most estuaries in western Europe. It breeds on damp moorland and lakesides.
