The low-lying coastal areas of North Carolina made ideal hiding places for pirate ships. The most famous practitioner of that trade in the early 18th century was Edward Teach, known as Blackbeard for his long, braided black beard.
Blackbeard and his crew of pirates terrorized sailors on the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea from 1716 through 1718. They ambushed ships carrying passengers and cargo in the dim light of dawn and dusk when the pirates’ ship was hard to see. The pirates often determined a ship’s nationality first. Then they raised that country’s flag on the pirate ship so they appeared to be friendly. Now able to draw close to the unsuspecting ship, the pirates hoisted Blackbeard’s flag only at the last moment. In 1718, Blackbeard was killed in an engagement with the British Navy near his favorite hideaway of Ocracoke Island. His head was severed and dangled from the bowsprit of one of the victorious ships. This magnificent chess set represents the combatants at this famous engagement. This is a NEW IN THE BOX SET. Features finely crafted HAND PAINTED coldcast resin figures. The tallest pieces measure 3 1/2" tall. THE SET COMES WITH a very nice 15" X 15" walnut board with pedestal feet.
