Here is a very nice early advertising matchbook, of standard size, in splendid condition overall, with barely any wear. This fine boxing-related collectible pictures the feisty Ukrainian facing the viewer, with "Kid Kaplan's Grill And Oyster Bar" around the portrait. Beneath is "Louis 'Kid' Kaplan - World's Undefeated Featherweight Champion - Cor. Church and Trumbull Sts. - Hartford, Conn.", with "Close Cover Before Striking" at the bottom.
At the top edge is "Phone 7-6555", and the back reads "Excellent Mixed Drinks - Steaks - Chops - And Finest Sea Food". The matches are all there, and at the bottom is "Lion Match Co., Inc. N.Y. Made In U.S.A." Mr. Kaplan (1901-1970) emigrated to the United States when he was five and fought professionally from 1919 to 1933. Boom! $1.99
