BOY WHAT A GIRL.....GREAT EARLY BLACK MUSICAL............................
Two musical producers are trying to scrape enough money together to finance their show. When one of their backers doesn't show. They convince transvistie Tim Moore to impresonate the second female backer.............................This is a great movie for anyone who likes 1940s small combo swing. Even without the music, it makes an acceptable farcical comedy, marrying the standard "hard-up producer tries to land a rich backer" plot with elements of "Charley's Aunt." But the musical numbers are superb. The Slam Stewart Trio perform two numbers. Stewart invented the technique of bowing his double bass and humming the same melody an octave higher while wearing a throat mike, producing a novel and distinctive sound in the days before electronic synthesisers made novel and distinctive sounds commonplace. Deek Watson performs with his singing group, The Brown Dots. Watson had left the Inkspots to inject some 'pep' into vocal quartets. Ann Cornell sings "I Refuse To Sing the Blues," in a rendering that bears comparison with Billie Holiday. There are numbers from the Big Sid Catlett band. Catlett had played drums for many great bands, large and small, including Fletcher Henderson, Lionel Hampton, Teddy Wilson, and Goodman. After a spell leading his own band, during which this film was made, he joined Armstrong's All-Stars. In one number Gene Krupa takes over the drums from him, remarking as he leaves, "Don't forget, I want you to do the same for me in one of my pictures." (It is that sort of movie. At one point the amply-proportioned rooming house landlord, run off his feet, says to camera, "Between these stairs and those bells, I'm never going to be able to finish this picture.") A gem of a picture which deserves to be better known. .............................
