Zinc Plate for image used in the New York Times circa 1970. This appears to be a woman dancer These plates were placed into an open place in the linotype plate with the type as part of the production process. The next step was the creation of a soft rubbery. flexible plate, called the 'blue plate' (since it commonly was the color blue), and from there the curved plates were created for the high speed presses. These image plates were then recycled as scrap metal. Apparently my father-in-law who worked at the New York Times for many years, including as a Production Manager on the 1st night shift, brought some of these home for his daughter, who eventually became my wife. I found some of these wrapped in newsprint in a carton. Capturing the details of the plate is very difficult. I used both a scanner and a digital camera, each of which has certain advantages in displaying the item. This plate measures 7-1/2" x 3" (195mm x 80mm).
