Boys' and Girls' Budget
A selection of stories for children
Fully Illustrated
George Sully, Publisher, New York
Copyright 1880
This old collection of stories, pictures, poems and entertainment for Victorian children is as well-preserved as I've seen such books. I'm always amazed at how sophisticated young ones were in those days, being offered some really sobering themes of starvation, war, violence and death, both in the human and animal kingdoms. The drawings in this collection are particularly scary, with depictions of foaming grizzlies, rats, wild boars and other toothy creatures. It also contains some lovely color plates of beautiful women, a noble lion and, as pictured, winter fun.
This is a hard-to-find book. It measures 8 inches by 10 inches. It is unpaginated. It is in remarkable shape for its age. The cover is worn in the usual places -- the corners and edges. The picture on the cover is slightly scratched and dirty, but all in all very good. The spine shows no wear or fading. The binding is solid. The interior is tight with no missing, torn or marred pages.
This is an unusual volume in first-rate condition.
