Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather. Although Branford Marsalis seems to be still searching for his niche, in his years in the public spotlight he has paved his way to jazz canonization. Arguably the premier saxophonist of his generation, Marsalis' forays into classical, pop, rap and funk (not to mention acting and the Tonight Show Starring Jay Leno) only add to the eclectic jazzman's credentials. On 1990's CRAZY PEOPLE MUSIC, we hear Marsalis stretching the boundaries of tonal jazz. And although his playing is reminiscent of predecessors such as Wayne Shorter and the inimitable John Coltrane, he charts new territory on selections such as "Wolverine," where he avoids falling into the "My Favorite Things" Coltrane rip-off trap sprung by many of his contemporaries. Marsalis treats the soprano with a lyrical touch. Other tracks of note include "Spartacus," an uptempo modal jam showcasing the saxophonist's tenor virtuosity, and the driving, hard-swinging drumming of Jeff Watts. On CRAZY PEOPLE MUSIC Marsalis and company breathe new life into the standard sax quartet setting.
