Polished Brass 5 Inch  Abney Level

Reproduction of years gone by.

This is a new handmade solid brass reproduction of an Abney Level. The Abney Level is used to measure vertical angle, known as inclination. It consists of a small telescope sight and an adjustable tubular spirit (bubble) level, which features two adjustment screws for careful calibration. The level is connected to a vertical scale demarcated in both slope and degrees.
When viewed through the eyepiece, a horizontal index line is aligned over the object being measured, and a reflected image of the tubular spirit level appears next to the object. The level is adjusted until the instrument is centered and aligned to the horizontal index line.
The view is 1/2 view with crosshair.
The angle of inclination or declination is then determined by reading the vernier scale - an attached magnifying lens assists in this precise process.  This reproduction would make an excellent gift, or addition to the scientific instrument or brass nautical collection. This a handmade reproduction, so don't expect absolute perfection, but this is a very nice reproduction.  you may need to do some calibration.

This item is 5 inches (12.7 centimeters) long when collapsed, and 7 1/8 inches (18.1 cm) long when the 1-power telescope is extended. The level has a 1 1/4 inches (3.2 centimeters) radius scale. This detailed level measures 2 1/4 inches (5.7 cm) tall, 1 1/4 inches (3.2 cm) thick, and weighs approximately 6.3 ounces (179 grams).
