This wood is from the estate of luthier Ted Davis, who died suddenly in October 2008. I have been asked to dispose of his considerable wood stash, which includes red spruce flat tops, red spruce billets of various sizes (up to cello size), white spruce billets from Newfoundland and Labrador, and many hardwoods, including Brazilian rosewood. In addition to cutting red spruce with Ted from 1990 until 2002, I also went on several Brazilian rosewood buying trips with him from 1988 until the CITES ban in 1992. For that reason, I know this Brazilian rosewood was bought pre-CITES. Unfortunately, there are no receipts to prove it. !!!No Reserve!!! For Auction: One “0” or parlor size Brazilian Rosewood (Dalbergia nigra) guitar back and side set. This is primarily new growth Brazilian Rosewood, harvested from about 1986 until the CITES ban in 1992. The coloration tends to be various shades of brown or tan, with occasional streaks of red or green. This is a great opportunity to stock up on wood that is almost extinct in today’s market. Ted was a ‘pack rat’, and owned most of this wood for many, many years. The majority of it was harvested from 1986 to 1989, so it is well seasoned and ready to use. This wood has been stored in a humidity controlled environment (40% to 55% relative humidity) for at least five years. This wood is located in the US, so there is no concern about customs restrictions. Description: “0” size (see description). Two-piece bookmatched back and two bookmatched sides. Medium chocolate color with tan and orange bands, plus darker striping throughout. Contrasting solid sapwood. The sapwood can all be trimmed off to make and “0” size guitar. Alternately, the sapwood can be left natural for dramatic effect. Both the back and sides are fully quartersawn. This set is all cut from the same log, for a perfect match in color and grain. The back is large enough for a “00” or “000” size guitar, but the sides, being only 27 7/8” long, are only long enough for an “0” size. The sides can possibly be made to work for a “00” size by allowing for the end piece inlay at the butt, and allowing for the neck heel. That would add possibly 3/4” to the length of each side. The back has no worm holes. The sides have approximately 12 pin-sized worm holes in each section, near one end. There are no knots or cracks in this set. All the plates are nice and flat. This is very resonant wood that will make a beautiful guitar. Back dimensions, each piece (in inches): Thickness: 0.160, thickness sanded Width: 8 1/4 Length: 20 7/8 Side dimensions, each piece (in inches): Thickness: 0.140, thickness planed Width: 4 3/4 to 5 1/4 Length: 27 7/8 I can only ship this in the U.S. PLEASE email all questions before placing your bid.
