Brenham stony-iron pallasite meteorite, mixture of metal (~90% iron & 10% nickel) and olivine (iron & magnesium silicates, red to orange fayalite, green forsterite/peridot). Some Brenham meteorites present as olivine poor iron with a medium octahedrite structure. The pal structure is the most common, iron is next and the least common are Brenham specimens with both pal and iron structures present. Approximate size and weight: 6.5g brenham iron meteorite pendant, etched, 4cm x 0.5cm x 0.4cm. Polished all sides. Sealed with paraffin wax. Free jeweler's rouge cloth, white side has rouge to remove tarnish, blue is for the final polish, these new cloths work great. Etched to show Nickel-Iron crystal pattern which requires cooling at 3 degrees per million years, yep, this structure can not be made by humans, we've only been here a few thousand years. Brenham for brains puzzle: a while ago i posted a classic pursuit problem, dog at 0,0 cat at 0,1 cat runs from 0,1 to 1,1 at constant velocity (make it 1 unit distance per unit time), dog runs at constant speed always running toward cat. how long to catch cat, or how fast does dog run, or what is the arc length of dog travel? all the same problem. numerical answer is (1+sqrt(5))/2= 1.6180339887... = golden ratio = average of the time to catch if cat runs towards the dog and time to catch when the cat runs away from dog. Why?
Only one more hint, if you think this is an exercise in calculus or diffeq you are on the wrong trail, the answer is very simple. And to show that the last picture has my scribbles, solving the problem using calc and then with the "short cut", why are these the "same". if the picture resolution is too low, email and i'll send a better image file, enjoy! I'll give a small brenham individual (at least 10gm) to the first 3 with the correct answer, limit one per household or club/society/any other human grouping and someone telling you the answer, well you'll have to decide that for yourself, maybe i should exclude anyone on Wall street? What if my specimen does not rust? Enjoy and do nothing, I do not recommend coatings that are difficult to remove. A light coating of mineral oil (not baby oil) or non-aqueous paste wax is sufficient and compatible with buffing. What if my specimen rusts? Return for a refund or replacement, return and I will refinish, or remove the corrosion yourself with a buffing wheel & jeweler's rouge or the supplied cloths. If you do nothing, or throw the specimen in your sock drawer, it will likely continue to rust-so, if the issue comes up, do something. Another option, see your local jeweler and they may be willing to buff the specimen for you. What if buffing does not remove the rust? A stronger abrasive is needed, for example, 1500-2500 grit sandpaper and then buff. How can I prevent corrosion? You can only reduce the rate in an atmosphere containing oxygen/water, avoid high humidity, bleach vapors, salts and other rust promoting agents. Will buffing remove the etch? Not normally, you would have to be pretty aggressive. 1500-2500 grit will eventually remove the pattern and sample will need to be etched again.
