This listing is for a Tibetan Buddhist prayer stone pendant handcarved in the himalayan kingdom of Nepal, similar to the one shown in these photos. They each measures approximately 1 1/8" long and come with a black string for hanging. Lower down this page, there are some other options you can choose for this pendant...
The prayer pendant is carved with the mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum . This is the protection prayer of Chenrezig (Tibetan) or Avalokiteshvara(Sanskrit), the embodiment of compassion. The other side shows the peaceful and compassionate eyes of Buddha.
The Buddha's eyes are shown to remind us to have compassion towards all living creatures and to be vigilant in staying on the dharma path.
Om is the sacred syllable venerated since ancient times by Buddhists, Brahmins, and Hindus alike. The universe is said to have begun with this sound, and all the sounds of life are said to be contained within it. Om is thus considered the "breath of all life", and often regarded as too holy to be spoken aloud.
Om Mani Padme Hum has no direct English translation, but often used as a guide is "Hail the jewel in the heart of lotus" or "Behold! The jewel in the lotus!". The Dalai Lama has given a synopsis of its meaning as "Thus the six syllables, Om Mani Padme Hum, mean that in dependence on the practice which is an indivisible union of method and wisdom, you can transform your impure body, speech and mind into the pure body, speech, and mind of a Buddha." It is thought that all the teachings of the Buddha are contained in this one prayer, and that the recitation of the mantra helps achieve perfection in the six practices from generosity to wisdom. Speaking, writing, or viewing the written form of this sacred prayer is beleived to benefit karma, invoking the benevolent blessings of Chenrezig, the embodiment of compassion.
It is said that one who recites "Om Mani Padme Hum". will be saved from evil and danger.
