An early and exceptional alabaster image of a sitting Buddha. Heavy remnants of gild and pigments along with black lacquer at the top. The Buddha is seated on a low base in the lotus position (vajrasana), his body upright, his left hands laid palm up in his lap. His right hand is stretched forward over his right knee so that the tips of his right fingers touch the ground. This is the bhumisparsa mudra or “earth touching attitude” and refers to the moment of the Buddha’s enlightenment. Origin: Mandalay, Central Burma |
