Item Description
You are buying 1 Hooded Dwarf, Hawaiian Heart, Buddha's Hand Elephant Ear Plant (Chinese Taro, Alocasia cucullata) that is 10" - 14" tall.
This taro has many names for many reasons:
Buddha's Hand:
Buddha’s Hand is the essence of Energy flowing upward towards the Heavens. In Chinese Folklore, the heart shaped leaves on the long elegant stems signify Buddha’s hand reaching up into the Heavens. In Ancient China, it is believed that it will bring you Long Life and Prosperity.
Hawaiian Hearts:
So named for the deep green heart-shaped leaves. The stem, of light green color, is disproportional to the leaves, because it can be very thick compared with the size of the leaves.
Hooded Dwarf:
Named for the hooded flowers that the mature plants get in the fall and winter months.
These plants can be cultivated indoors, in a bright spot in your home (or office!). In warm months you can place it outdoors in your garden or in large pot on your deck, patio or poolside in bright or partial shade. These are fast growing, but don’t get too large – perfect for a spot where you want to bring in a feel of the tropics but don’t have room for a large plant.
Cultivation in pots is recommended in zones 8 or colder. These are hardy in USDA zones: 9 to 12 (zone 9a is borderline for these plants – plant in the garden with care in this zone).
These plants will be shipped with their roots bundled in damp newspaper, but out of the pot.
These can also be cultivated more as a bonsai, see the photos of some like this above. To bonsai it, allow older plants (with mature bulbs) to dry, or nearly dry, between waterings and keep leaves trimmed.
You are buying ONE PLANT that is from 10” – 14” in height from the soil surface to the highest leaf tip; it is growing in a 5" pot, is over 1 year old.
The picture is of the mother plant which is about 4 years old - YOU ARE RECEIVING AN OFF-SHOOT OF THIS PLANT; NOT THE PLANT IN THE PHOTO. If you would like a photo of the actual plants being sold, email me and I will be happy to send you one.
Email me with any questions before buying/bidding. |

SHIPPING SPECIFICS:
These are shipped bare-root wrapped in damp newspaper to keep the plants healthy during shipping. I use PRIORITY MAIL to assure timely delivery. Shipping of plants is done on Monday's and Tuesday's (and sometimes Wednesday's) to avoid plants sitting in a warehouse or truck over a weekend awaiting delivery. Payment must be received no later than 5pm EST on Monday for the plants to go out the next day; otherwise it will be shipped the following week.
I'm sorry but PICK UP of orders is not available due to zoning restrictions.
COLD WEATHER WARNING:
My plants are TROPICAL - COLD WEATHER / FREEZING TEMPERATURES MAY DAMAGE THEM DURING SHIPPING. If the temperatures in your area pose a danger to these plants, PLEASE DO NOT BUY THEM UNTIL TEMPERATURES ARE SUITABLE FOR SHIPPING in your area. If you want them shipped, regardless of cold weather, you take 100% of the responsibility for the healthy delivery of the plants. BEING A SMALL GROWER, I DO NOT HAVE THE SPACE OR RESOURCES TO HOLD PLANTS FOR LATER SHIPPING.
If you have any question about whether temperatures in your area are suitable for shipping, please email me and let me know what city and state you're in.
If at all possible, have your plants shipped to your office or someplace where they can be brought in out of the weather as soon as they are delivered.
INSURANCE:
Insurance is optional. Keep in mind that insurance on plants covers them only if they don't arrive - if plants are damaged in shipping (from heat, cold, etc.), Postal Insurance DOES NOT COVER THAT.
USA ONLY:
PLANTS CAN NOT BE SHIPPED INTERNATIONALLY - USA ONLY. |
