"Metallurgy of the Tlingit, Dene, and Eskimo by John Witthoft and Frances Eyman. , 28 B&W photos This monograph explains how to identify native copper and other metal pieces from the Euro-trade pieces. The Indians claimed that they could distinguish the valuable native metal from commercial substitutes by appearances. The authors noticed the significant features of the dagger's blades that where made of native copper, and explains what to look for. The authors points out two obvious ways that native copper differs from smelter copper. With this knowledge it also helps to date the object and to distinguish the technology of the Tlingit , central Eskimo, and Dene.. Of the three above mention tribes , the metallurgy of the Tlingit was the most primitive, the second most primitive were the Central Eskimo(the Copper Eskimo) and the Dene were far the most advanced of the North. The article explains the different metallurgy between the three tribes, also the shared technology, the difference in form and motifs. A great article on a subject matter that is very seldom covered.
