Burundi, officially the Republic of Burundi, is a small country in the Great Lakes region of Africa. It is bordered by Rwanda on the north, Tanzania on the south and east, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the west. Although the country is landlocked, much of its western border is adjacent to Lake Tanganyika. The country's modern name is derived from its Bantu language, Kirundi.

Geographically isolated, facing population pressures and having sparse resources, Burundi has the lowest GDP per capita in the world, arguably making it the poorest country on the planet.

Currency History
The franc (ISO 4217 code is BIF) is the currency of Burundi. It is nominally subdivided into 100 centimes, although coins have never been issued in centimes since Burundi began issuing its own currency. Only during the period when Burundi used the Belgian Congo franc were centime coins issued.

The franc became the currency of Burundi in 1916, when Belgium occupied the former German colony and replaced the German East African rupie with the Belgian Congo franc. Burundi used the currency of Belgian Congo until 1960, when the Rwanda and Burundi franc was introduced. Burundi began issuing its own francs in 1964. There are plans to introduce a common currency, a new East African shilling, for the five member states of the East African Community by the end of 2009.

Banknotes
In 1964, notes of the Bank of Emission of Rwanda and Burundi, in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 francs, were overprinted with the word "Burundi" for use in the country. These were followed in 1964 and 1965 by regular issues in the same denominations by the Bank of the Kingdom of Burundi.

In 1966, notes for 20 francs and above were overprinted by the Bank of the Republic of Burundi, replacing the word "Kingdom" with "Republic". Regular issues of this bank began in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000 and 5000 francs. 10 francs were replaced by coins in 1968. 2000 francs notes were introduced in 2001, followed by 10,000 francs in 2004. Delivery: All items shipped are shipped at the buyers own risk, without insurance, unless otherwise agreed upon by us, prior to bidding and prior to the closing of the auction.

Lost Items: As mentioned above, we obtain proof of postage on all items sent, and these can be provided if the postal service has lost the item. We will do all we can to work with you to track a lost item with the Post Office, and will stay in contact with you for the duration of the search until an outcome is reached.

Faulty Items: All products are individually inspected before being dispatched, to ensure the correct items are sent out in the described condition. In the unlikely event that your item received is not as described, please return it to us within 7 days of receipt in its original condition. Upon inspection, we will be happy to replace, where possible or refund you in full if the item is found to be indeed mis-described. No returns accepted after 30 days of the close of the auction. Shipping and Insurance are not refundable.
